Know before you go…
Before venturing in, on or under the water familiarise yourself with the Safety Codes.
The Water, Boat and Outdoor Safety Codes offer a few simple essential rules to help ensure the safety of yourself and others. We encourage you to use these as a starting point then seek more knowledge specific to your chosen activity – an essential part of your planning and preparation.
You can download your own copy of the Codes from the Resources list on this page, or if English is not your first language visit Adventure Smart where you will find them in 16 other languages.
You may also like to check out the International Open Water Safety Guidelines featured on the Community Safety page.
Instrumental in the development of the Codes were the NZ Mountain Safety Council, Drowning Prevention Council and National Pleasure Boat Safety Forum, in collaboration with the sectors they represent.
