In line with the New Zealand Curriculum (2007) Aquatic Skills (p22), 'it is expected that all students will have had the opportunties to learn basic aquatic skills by the end of year 6'.
It is essential, under the curriculum, that swimming and water safety programmes delivered by swim schools are not generic and prescriptive, rather they must meet the needs of the students in each school. Dialogue between swim school operators and lead teachers is essential to ensure these needs are being met.
WaterSafe Auckland has developed some best practice templates for schools and swim schools to use for aquatics education in schools.
