Water safety experts call media forum on drowning

International drowning prevention expert and WaterSafe Auckland board member Dr Kevin Moran will lead a forum next Tuesday to discuss New Zealand’s drowning problem, and urges members of the media to attend.

What: Media forum on drowning – the problem, the terminology, the reporting.

When: 4.00pm – 5.00pm, Tuesday 6 December 2016

Where:  WaterSafe Auckland, 85 Westhaven Drive, Westhaven, Auckland. Parking available (white spaces please).

Who:

  • Dr Kevin Moran ONZM.
Board Member, WaterSafe Auckland. Principal Lecturer in Health & Physical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. Co-Chair International Task Force on Drowning Prevention.
  • Jonathon Webber.
Chief Executive WaterSafe Auckland. Drowning prevention, advanced qualified lifeguard, emergency care, risk management.
  • Richard Pamatatau.
Board Member, WaterSafe Auckland. Programme Leader, Graduate Diploma in Pacific Journalism, School of Communication Studies, AUT University.

Why:     WaterSafe Auckland is concerned at further loss of life over the summer, typically peaking over the holiday period when Kiwi activities invariably involved water of some kind. Achieving fewer drownings in Auckland and across New Zealand is a collective responsibility, one in which the media plays a key role.
