Come along to our Safe Crab Fishing Seminar and Beach Day, learn how to net crab safely, know about local sea and weather conditions and dangers, the importance of wearing lifejackets and know how to return home safely.
The seminar has been arranged by water safety and rescue organisations ahead of another busy summer which will see thousands of people flock to Northland beaches to set crab nets and pots.
New Zealand Police, Surf Lifesaving Northern Region and WaterSafe Auckland have joined forces in an effort to promote safer crab fishing in an effort to prevent the high number of rescues which occurred last summer, including two drownings.
There were 21 recorded rescues on Northland’s Ruakaka and Waipu beaches this year, and two drownings at the popular Uretiti Beach, reports Waipu-based Constable Martin Geddes. Rescues involving Asian fishers are also on the increase.
Close to 1000 people a day visited the beaches over the peak summer months this year, many of whom are there to net crabs.
“We welcome the fishers, many of whom are from Auckland, but some of them may not be aware of the dangers and we wish to have the opportunity to share with them some safety precautions so that they can be kept safe,” he said.
Steps initiated by New Zealand Police, Surf Life Saving Northern Region and WaterSafe Auckland include multilingual crab fishing safety signage and flyers, education of Asian Safety Patrol members and practical demonstrations at the Crab Fishing Seminar and Beach Day to be held in December.
Members of Auckland’s Asian community and media are encouraged to attend the Seminar and Beach Day to learn more about crab fishing safely, and help us help others to do so, and return home safely to their families.
